What is Perinatal Mental Health?

  • Perinatal mental health is all about caring for your emotional and relational well-being during pregnancy and the first year after your baby arrives. This season of life can bring joy, hope, and excitement—but it can also bring big changes, unexpected feelings, and moments that feel heavier than you imagined. Perinatal mental health support helps you navigate these changes with compassion, steadiness, and a sense of connection to yourself, your baby, and the people who matter most.

  • For Parents

    • Emotional Support: Pregnancy and the postpartum period can stir up anxiety, sadness, or overwhelm. You don’t have to carry that alone.

    • Stronger Relationships: This season can stretch partnerships and support systems. Therapy can help you feel more understood and connected.

    • Confidence & Clarity: With guidance, many parents start to feel more capable, calm, and attuned to their own needs and their baby’s needs.

    For Infants

    • Secure Attachment: Babies thrive when caregivers feel resourced and supported.

    • Healthy Development: A parent’s emotional health lays the foundation for a baby’s early brain development and sense of security.

Caring for yourself is one of the most meaningful ways you care for your baby.

  • Perinatal mental health challenges are common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of. Many parents experience some of the following:

    • Ongoing sadness, tearfulness, or emotional numbness

    • Intense worry or racing thoughts

    • Feeling disconnected from your baby or partner

    • Irritability, anger, or emotional overwhelm

    • Difficulty sleeping even when the baby sleeps

    • Panic attacks or intrusive thoughts

    • Feeling “not like yourself” or unsure of your ability to parent

If these experiences sound familiar, you are not failing—your nervous system is asking for support.

What is Infant Mental Health?

  • Infant mental health focuses on the emotional, social, and relational development of babies from birth to age five. Even in the earliest months of life, infants are building the foundations for how they connect, trust, communicate, and understand the world around them.

Infant mental health support isn’t about diagnosing babies the way we diagnose older children—it’s about understanding their cues, nurturing secure relationships, and helping caregivers feel confident and connected. When we support an infant’s emotional world, we are also supporting the caregivers who shape that world every day.

  • For Infants

    • Secure Attachment: Babies need consistent, nurturing relationships to feel safe and develop healthy bonds.

    • Healthy Brain Development: Early interactions—eye contact, comfort, soothing, play—literally shape the architecture of the brain.

    • Emotional Regulation: Infants learn how to cope with stress through the calm, supportive presence of caregivers.

    For Parents and Caregivers

    • Understanding Your Baby: Support can help you make sense of your baby’s cues, temperament, and needs.

    • Confidence in Parenting: Guidance can reduce stress and increase your sense of competence and connection.

    • Strengthening the Parent–Infant Bond: When the relationship feels safe and attuned, both baby and caregiver thrive.

Infant mental health is really relationship health—and it grows strongest when families receive the support they need.
